Die sizilianische Hauptstadt, mit über 670.000 Einwohnern war vor vier Jahren (2018) europäische Kulturhauptstadt. Als "Paris des Südens" von der Presse betitelt, hat Palermo nach unruhigen Jahrzehnten, im sichtbaren Mafiakampf ( bis 1992) vor 30 Jahren, eine         Wende eingeschlagen. Palermo hat sich zu einer lebensfrohen und quirligen Stadt entwickelt, in der man von morgens bis abends flanieren kann. Die Parlermitaner sind stolz auf eine Gesichte, die sich bis ins 9.Jh vor Chr. und die Zeit der Phönizier zurückverfolgen lässt. Danach hielten fast alle führenden europäischen Mächte, bis ins 19. Jh hinein, Sizilien als Trophäe eigener Interessen. Erst durch die Wiedervereinigung mit Italien 1861, unter König Victorio Emanuele, wurde Sizilien von seiner Rolle " Spielball europäischer Mächte"  zu sein, erlöst.  

Bewunderung verdienen Sehenswürdigkeiten, herausragender Epochen, etwa der arabo-normanischen, barocken, oder vom hiesigen Jugendstil (Liberty Style) geprägte Zeit. Aber auch die Gegenwart, mit herausragenden Beispielen der "Street Art" und modernen, in Kunstmuseen verwandelten Palästen, wo sich Altes mit Neuem verbindet, verrät das neu erwachte "Feeling" für die oft geschundene Hauptstadt. Eine quirlige und tolerante Stadt, mit großer Vergangenheit, in der man flanieren kann, wie in jeder anderen Stadt. Ein Spaziergang über, Plätze, Gassen, Märkte, Häfen, vorbei an Kirchen, Museen und Parks, verschafft Einblicke in diese besondere Stadt, die zu den Ältesten in Europa gehört. The Sicilian capital, with over 670,000 inhabitants, was european capital of culture, four years ago (2018). Since that moment , nick named as the "Paris of the South" by public media, Palermo  left behind one of it´s worst 30 years of a terrible, and sometimes still visible mafia struggle (until 1992). Palermo has developed into a lively city, where you can stroll from morning to night. The Parlermitans are proud of a history, that can be traced back to the 9th century BC, the time of the Phoenicians.settlement and foundation. After all, almost all of Europe's leading powers held Sicily as a trophy for their own interests upt to the 19th century. It was not before the reunification with Italy, in 1861, under King Victorio Emanuele, that Sicily was released from its role as a "plaything of European powers".
Several sights deserve a special admiration, outstanding periods, such as the Arab-Norman, Baroque, Art Nouveau (Liberty Style) which left their traces in Palermo.Up to present times, with outstanding examples of "Street Art" wall graffities, without forgetting the metamorphosis of brilliant Barock Palaces, transformed into Modern Art Museums combining old and new tendencies, reveals the newly awakened "feeling" , for the often battered Sicilian capital Palermo.  A lively city with a great past where you can stroll like in any other city. A walk across squares, alleys, markets, ports, past churches, museums and parks provides insights into this special city,  one of the oldest in Europe.
